The Problem with Can Jam

Don’t get me wrong, Can Jam 2009 was a blast and the vendors and people there were very nice, for the most part. One thing that was brought to my attention was the fact that girls are ostracized. I went with my good friend Vivian who has been into audio gear since she was little. Her dad is an audiophile and his influence has rubbed off on his daughter. Whenever we walked into a room, we would get stares from some of the Head-fi.org members that were there for the meet. At times Vivian became uncomfortable and asked to go.

This is not to say that the organizers of the event took part in this. Quite the contrary, in fact. The organizers of the event and the vendors there were all very respectable and helpful. What I do not understand is why there is such shock that there was a girl, other than a rep for a company, at the meet for pleasure and not work. Girls enjoy music too.

Other than that, we got to try some amazing stuff and will never forget this experience. I want to partake in next year’s meet but please let there be more than one girl there the next time. Thanks to the organizers at Head-fi for such a successful event.
